sub+am/is/are+v4+obj
Here v4 means add ‘ing’ to the verb(V1)
eg: I am writing a novel.
she is praying to God.
Where do we use the present continuous tense?
*To express an action going on at the time of speaking.
eg:The baby is sleeping now.
*To express a temporary action which may not actually be happening at the time of speaking.
eg:We are constructing a house.(we are not constructing a house now)
*To express a planned program that takes place in the ‘Near Future’.
eg:Sukanya is going to U.S.A next month.
*To express an obstinate habit using an adverb like always,continually,constantly.
eg:Mr.Ajay is always coming late to office.
*Usually the following words appears in this tense.
Now,at present,at this movement,still,look,listen,while etc.
eg:Look,He is playing in the Garden.
*The following verbs,on account of their meaning are not normally used in the continuous form.
eg: Verbs of Perception: see,hear,smell,notice,recognize.
Verbs of appearance:appear,look,seem.
Verbs of emotion:love,wish,want,desire,feel,hate,hope,
refuse,prefer.
Verbs of thinking:think,suppose,believe,agree,consider
remember,know,forget,consider,remember,know,understand,
mind,mean,trust,image.
Verbs of possession:be,own,possess,contain,contest of,have,and belong to.
eg:I am having a car.(Incorrect)
I have a car.(Correct)
Note:
If above verbs are used in ‘ing’ form,they express a different meaning than their original one.
eg:Boys are minding the garden(looking after).
